The Jet-Disk Connection and Blazar Unification

چکیده

We discuss the relation between the power carried by relativistic jets and the nuclear power provided by accretion, for a group of blazars including FSRQs and BL Lac objects. They are characterized by good quality broad band X-ray data provided by the Beppo SAX satellite. The jet powers are estimated using physical parameters determined from uniformly modelling their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Our analysis indicates that for Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars the total jet power is of the same order as the accretion power. We suggest that blazar jets are likely powered by energy extraction from a rapidly spinning black hole through the magnetic field provided by the accretion disk. FSRQs must have large BH masses (10 − 10M ) and high, near Eddington accretion rates. For BL Lac objects the jet luminosity is larger than the disk luminosity. This can be understood within the same scenario if BL Lac objects have masses similar to FSRQ but accrete at largely subcritical rates, whereby the accretion disk radiates inefficiently. Thus the “unification” of the two classes into a single blazar population, previously proposed on the basis of a spectral sequence governed by luminosity, finds a physical basis.

Radiation fields of disk , BLR and torus in quasars and blazars : implications for gamma - ray absorption

The radiation fields external to the jets and originating from within a few parsecs from the black hole, are discussed in this paper. They are the direct radiation from an accretion disk in symbiosis with jets, the radiation field from the broad line region (BLR) surrounding the accretion disk, and the infrared radiation from a dusty torus. The jet/disk symbiosis modifies the energetics in the ...

Unifying All Blazars

We propose a new physical model for the unification of all Blazars. The blazar phenomenology can be accounted for by a sequence in the source power and intensity of the diffuse radiation field surrounding the relativistic jet. This regulates the equilibrium electron distribution and hence the shape of the spectral energy distribution (SED), and in turn the classification into a blazar “flavour”...

Blue Quasars and Blazar Unification Schemes

Blue quasars (BQs) are sources with strong broad emission lines and flat hard X-ray spectra, properties that resemble classical flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), and high peak frequencies and steep soft X-ray spectra, properties that resemble intermediate or high peak frequency BL Lacertae objects (IBLs and HBLs respectively). BQs challenge our understanding of blazar properties in terms of ...

Transformation Properties of External Radiation Fields, Energy-Loss Rates and Scattered Spectra, and a Model for Blazar Variability

We treat transformation properties of external radiation fields in the proper frame of a plasma moving with constant speed. The specific spectral energy densities of external isotropic and accretion-disk radiation fields are derived in the comoving frame of relativistic outflows, such as those thought to be found near black-hole jet and gammaray burst sources. Nonthermal electrons and positrons...

Cyclotron Maser Emission from Blazar Jets?

We consider the production of electron cyclotron maser emission by lowdensity, highly magnetized plasmas in relativistic jets. The population inversion required to drive cyclotron maser instability could occur in localized, transient sites where hydromagnetic instabilities, shocks, and/or turbulence lead to magnetic mirroring along current-carrying flux tubes. The maser is pumped by the convers...
